Sun safety tips

These suggestions are some of the best ways to be sun safe in the hot Australian sun.

The following recommendations will help keep you and your family sun safe all day and reduce your risk of skin damage.

Sunscreen – Broad spectrum sunscreen will keep you protected all year round. Sunscreen works by absorbing, reflecting or scattering sunlight.  So, when choosing a sunscreen look for the following information on the label:

  • An SPF for 30+ or higher.
  • A broad-spectrum sunscreen, this means it protects against UVA and UVB.
  • Water resistant.
  • Is still within it use by date.

Sunscreen does wear off over time, so it is important to make sure you apply 20 minutes before going out into the sun and then reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating or towelling off. A zinc cream can also be used for lips, ear and nose for extra protection.

Seek shade – The best way to protect your skin from the sun other then sunscreen is by seeking shade this can either be by sitting under an umbrella, tree or other shelter. This will also help minimise heat stroke risks and regulate body temperatures, especially in children.

Wearing protective clothing – This includes hats, rash shirts and sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays. Hats and rash shirts are an extra precaution when you are unable to find shade, especially when swimming as it will protect us from any harsh UV rays.

Avoid the hottest part of the day – If possible it is important to try and stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day this is usually between 10 am to 3pm. Remember even on cloudy or overcast days, there can still be strong UV rays which can cause unexpected sunburn and skin damage.

These suggestions are some of the best ways to be sun safe in the hot Australian sun. So, when walking out your door think about what your wearing. Are you well covered, do you have your sunglasses and sunscreen? Being prepared is the best way of staying sun safe.
